BATS Theatre Co Inc presents

Directors workshop for emerging directors

In this workshop participants will analyse an extract of a play and explore how to gain the best out of auditionees.  Once the cast is chosen we move onto learning how to direct a scene, blocking, to staging styles.  Your piece will be shown to the workshop audience and critiqued towards further improvement each time.

Over two sessions, this 4 hour workshop will prepare you to enter and move forward into the world of directing.  There will be a small amount of homework, with post workshop guidance for a successful future in directing.

The workshop will be led by Catherine Steer, Artistic Director of Queensland School of Performing Arts (Sunshine Coast).  Catherine has directed a variety of stage work over 25 years, musicals, one act plays and full length.  She has published and devised various works.  She also writes plays for young people, directing and producing up to 10 small scale productions per year.  She recently directed Blood Brothers for BATS.  Catherine is currently a Masters student on the Professional Practice course at University of the Sunshine Coast tutored by Lynne Bradley and Simon Woods of ZenZen Zo.

Catherine has interest in mask, puppet and political theatre and has trained with Trestle Theatre Company, Norwich Puppet Theatre and Rob Pensalfini of QSE in Theatre of the Oppressed.

Catherine states “Directing is no different to being a painter placing his/her own art in a gallery. Like any artist, directing requires confidence, imagination and a set of basic, specific skills. Once a new director has these they can work towards preparing a piece of theatre art for an audience. If you feel you want to be directing plays, then you probably should be, and this workshop will get you started.”

The cost of the workshop is $10.00 per session. So this is an opportunity too good to miss.
